CONTINUE BEING FIRST
Founded in 1858 as a medical school as well as a hospital, Long Island
College Hospital (LICH) has more than 60 clinics, over 500 beds, 24-hour
emergency care, and services in all major surgical and medical specialties.
Nationally recognized for clinical excellence in nephrology, urology,
allergies and asthma, LICH is the primary clinical teaching affiliate
of the SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. LICH has recently undergone
a $63 million modernization program.
As one of the oldest nursing schools in the country, LICH carries
a tradition of innovation for nurses. It was the first medical school
to include bedside teaching as a standard part of the curriculum.
It was the first hospital to use dialysis to treat diabetes. It started
the first ambulance service in Brooklyn. Throughout this history,
LICH has managed to combine the best features of a major medical center
with the personal approach of a community-centered hospital.
